
The power engineering was the first among the industries to implement SCADA software. Today, the SCADA implementations in power engineering are still the largest control systems in terms of both the number of I/O points and scale/quality of service functions. The control system of Nassiriya heat & power plant is one of the most exemplary deployments of TRACE MODE SCADA in power engineering.
Each of the four Nassiriya power units has 210 MW power. Supplying electricity to Baghdad, the plant is a key player of the Iraq power system. In 2000, Nassiriya power plant has launched a new control system. The project was financed by UNO and Iraqi Ministry of Power.
The facilities of such scale simply cannot operate without an appropriate automation system. The control system at Nassiriya power plant was designed by Interenergoservice. PIK ZEBRA (Authorized System Partner of AdAstrA) provided the DCS, while ORGRES company offered technical support.
The integrated SCADA and SOFTLOGIC system TRACE MODE was used as the main tool for development of the Nassiriya control system. The operator level of the control system (workstations) is based on the SCADA TRACE MODE Real Time Monitors. For direct process control, the DCS KRUIZ by PIK ZEBRA was employed running under control of the Micro TRACE MODE SOFTLOGIC software.
The process control system at each power units of the Nassiriya power plant had the following parameters:
- 4,500 I/O points;
- 13 controller cabinets;
- 19 TRACE MODE based operator workstations;
- 4х0.75m shared screen;
- 1 emergency control panel;
- 1 electrician's control panel;
- 9 cross cabinets.
For on-the-go check of DCS KRUIZ operation, the Nassiriya developer team has set up a special test stand.
The control system at Nassiriya power plant exhibited a record setup time: the programming started in October, 1999, and in July 2000, two Nassiriya power units were launched and attained a projected performance. Only 10 engineers and 7 developers s upported the two last stages of the project.
To achieve immediate results, the Nassiriya developer team leveraged unique SCADA TRACE MODE technology:
- autobuilding at controller level, i.e. automatic generation of channels approaching I/O cards of DCS KRUIZ;
- autobuilding at operators' workstation level ensuring automatic generation of all channels that operate within network exchange called "automatic transmitting";
- database import into SCADA using ODBC;
- collaborative heat & power plant project development.
SCADA TRACE MODE helped implement about 3,000 various control algorithms at Nassiriya power plant from typical (shutters, motors, loops) to more complex and interconnected. All algorithms for the control system at Nassiriya plant were developed by ORGRES.
Below are given some data of the software installed at various nodes of the Nassiriya control system:
- Turbine operator's workstation: 35 graphical screens, 32 types of virtual control windows with 10 customizable tables with parameters, bar graphs, plots; 5,105 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 375 ms acquisition cycle;
- Turbine operator alarm's workstation: 12 graphical screens; 7,233 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 110 ms acquisition cycle;
- Boiler operator's workstation: 98 graphical screens, 32 types of virtual control windows with 10 customizable tables with parameters, bar graphs, plots; 5,613 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 375 ms acquisition cycle;
- Boiler operator alarm's workstation: 12 graphical screens; 6,807 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 110 ms acquisition cycle;
- Standby engineer's workstation: 193 graphical screens including 71 plots from the archive; 10,845 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 375 ms acquisition cycle;
- PTC diagnostics operator's workstation: 20 graphical screens; 6,640 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 220 ms acquisition cycle;
- Archive (redundant) server: 15,571 channels, running redundant TRACE MODE Global Logger with 110 мс acquisition cycle;
- Protocol operator's workstation: 72 types of protocols running TRACE MODE Global Documentation Server;
- Plant senior engineer operator's workstation: 58 graphical screens; 20 customizable plots; 8360 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 375 ms acquisition cycle;
- Plant standby engineer's workstation: 10 graphical screens; 360 channels acquiring data
from four OPC servers; running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 375 ms acquisition cycle;
- Shared operator's workstation (4 pcs.): 4 graphical screens; 4,267 channels, running TRACE MODE NetLink RTM with 375 ms acquisition cycle;
- PTC KRUIZ controllers racks (13 pcs.): 700 to 1500 TRACE MODE channels in each rack, 30-80 formulas, and acquisition cycle 200 to 375 ms depending on the algorithms run.
Today, the robust plant control system, as well as the user-friendly SCADA TRACE MODE allow the power units to be operated by the Nassisriya plant stuff.
