TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI in Control of the 1000 MW Power-Generating Unit No. 1 at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant

In 2002, the TRACE MODE based SCADA/HMI and SOFTLOGIC control system for the power-generating unit No. 1 was successfully commissioned at the Kalinin nuclear power plant (Russia, Tver region). The project was developed by the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre – VNIIEF.

The Kalinin nuclear power plant is a branch of the Russian state nuclear management company Rosenergoatom. The power plant is situated to the north from the Moscow city. The customers of the energy generated by the Kalinin nuclear power plant are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir and Tver cities.

The TRACE MODE SCADA and SOFTLOGIC-based control system has replaced the old “URAN-V2” power unit monitoring system. The uppermost importance of this project has made the VNIIEF’s engineers to perform the implementation by two stages: at first the new control system was launched together with the old equipment and software and only after the one year trial period the TRACE MODE based control system was launched as a stand-alone application.

The following equipment and software have been used in the control system:

  • 3 Micro PC PC-based controllers (Octagon Systems, USA) with TRACE MODE Micro RTM runtime software;
  • 2 AMCS (automatic monitoring and control system) controllers connected via Most 2К interface cards over RS-485;
  • Local area network Ethernet 10Mbit combining the Micro PC controllers and TRACE MODE servers;
  • Dual redundant TRACE MODE Real Time Monitor (Double Force RTM) – the main SCADA server with automatic hot redundancy;
  • 5 HMI workstations under the TRACE MODE NetLink Light HMI consoles, connected over the redundant local area network Ethernet 100 Mbit to the redundant server;
  • The TRACE MODE Logger – the archive server for the control system ;
  • The TRACE MODE Documentation server for automatic reports generation based on archive data;
  • The TRACE MODE network real time monitor (NetLink RTM) – TRACE MODE real time server for the data acquisition and for the standby control (in the redundant control room);
  • 3 workstations under the TRACE MODE NetLink Light HMI software connected over a redundant 100 Mbit Ethernet network to the NetLink RTM server;
  • A shift engineer workstations based on NetLink RTM SCADA/HMI software operating directly in the 10 Mbit controller network .

The control system is fully redundant, everything is duplicated: controllers, communication lines, data acquisition servers and workstations. Totally, 2280 analogue and 2550 digital signals are polled in the system. In doing so, the system cycle equals to 20 ms only.

Jointly with the TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI and SOFTLOGIC-system, at the Kalinin nuclear power plant operate databases and a number of application programs, which interaction is carried out via standard program interfaces - ODBC, OPC, DDE.

Since 2002, the nuclear power unit control system operates under TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI reliably, without failures and non-regular situations as it is a rule for technological facilities of such importance. The new control system has reduced the number of accidents at the Kalinin nuclear power plant and the electricity generation has become much safer and effective.

In 2002 the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant was awarded as "The Best Nuclear Power Plant of the 2002".

A similar control system was implemented at the Kola nuclear power plant in 2003 with assistance of VNIIEF.
